About Freya
Older kids enjoy picture books, too, as do adults of all ages and backgrounds. That's why it's so important to us that children and adults ages 7 and up have access to quality picture books that are deftly illustrated, lyrically written, and focus on high-interest topics. Balancing whimsy, criticality, and poetic language -- and featuring brilliant watercolor illustrations -- Freya Books aims to provide compelling stories about everything from body image to reproductive health to emotional wellness in ways that both inform and entertain.
Freya donates twenty percent or more of the profits from its releases to social justice organizations. Check out our current releases to see which organizations we have chosen to support and amplify.

Phoebe the Mighty Mermaid
Our 2025-26 Picture Book is Coming Soon(ish)...
Phoebe, a nine-year-old girl and would-be mermaid, reckons with her body image after a humiliating visit to the doctor. Her only escape is imagining herself as queen of an underwater kingdom -- moving freely across the ocean, losing herself in its biodiverse depths. Because after all the teasing and hurtful comments she has faced about her size, Phoebe feels that it's too difficult to be human. Ultimately, with the help of her family and a group of mighty mermaids, Phoebe learns to accept her body as it is -- even when it's hard.

Author
Veronica B. Walton
is a writer, researcher, and educator from New Jersey. In addition to her work on Freya Books, she is the author of Hiraeth: 17 Love Poems from Ethel Micro-Press and has been published in various poetry journals. An alumna of Bryn Mawr College and the Bank Street Graduate School of Education, Veronica currently works as a literacy specialist and is the proud mother of two adorable cats, Banjo and Twiggy.

Illustrator
Sienna Sun
teaches fifth grade at General George Meade School in North Philadelphia, where she also teaches the afterschool art program. Sienna works with ink, pencils, watercolors and magic; she loves to care for stray cats and nature. Sienna studied Psychology and English at Rutgers University. As an artist and writer they often pull from their childhood experiences growing up in rural Georgia, São Paulo, Brazil and New Jersey.
